We could do it right now, we have millions of wells that are capped and not producing that could. There is more profit for the big oil company's to import and that in turn keeps the price up for the consumer. Big oil has us over a barrel and will keep us there as long as there are bucks to be made. We need a whole other industry to start up using alternate fuels and let them eat their oil.

To answer your question right now if we wanted to. The real question comes down to economics. Currently, with the higher cost of exploration and development of oil in the US it is cheaper to import the oil that we need. Like wise, coal gassification and liquifaction along with shale oil, and bio-fuels, could provide for all of our fuel needs. The problem is that the costs to switch to these technologies would be far more expensive than the cost of simply importing the oil.

you know, there is a moon and I think it is one of Saturn's maybe, but the whole moon is covered with natural gas, enough to sustain the world for a billion years. Guess that is the only way, but then again I'm sure there would be some coalition against the transport from the place to Earth because we might kill some bacteria in space......tree huggers, Gotta love them, gotta hate them.

natural gas takes millions of years to form, and even after that, you still have to filter it and all that stuff. unless we find an alternate fuel source, we will be dependent on the far east for a long time.

Minimally? As long as it could take to build wells in Alaska, off the coast of California, and in the Gulf of Mexico. This nation is sitting on large reserves of oil, but we are not able to utilize them because of efforts of environmentalists to stop our drilling. As such, I think it's safe to say we will never be independant energy-wise.
