Limit the use of oil and other unrecoverable resources. Maybe we can concentrate on using solar power.

Sustainable development requires infinite resources to develop. The problem we have run into is that we are exhausting our resources, yet continuing to function as if they're inexhaustible. When every square foot of the planet has been developed, when every natural resource has been completely tapped out, development must, perforce, stop. Naturally, it is likely we will destroy human civilization as we know it long before then as the wars for control of what's left become increasingly savage. The question to ask is not "How to save the planet", this planet has survived a let worse than we could throw at her; not "How to save humanity" a lot of isolated aboriginal cultures are likely to do just fine; but "How to preserve our culture and society in the face of ever increasing demand combined with ever decreasing resources". In a world where almost all our major problems can be directly or indirectly traced to over-population, any attempt to treat the symptoms while ignoring the disease is like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
