Why is the wired telephone cord between the headset and main set is curl rather than straight?

It is coiled so that it retracts by itself rather than having a 6 foot long wire hanging to the floor.

Bcasue the cord had to be elongated when were required.
and a straight cord would not be of much help

i think so it's more flexible to stretch or scrunch up more.
