Please consult your physio first. My sister was in the same position and did pilates. But it ended up doing more damage than good cause her lumbar region had a broken bone and all the exercise she did she placed too much pressure on one side cause she was not aligned and now she has an unstable pelvis and one leg is shorter than the other. Look this is a great website but when your health is concerned we shouldn't help you without understanding what a bad back means cause without knowledge we could be doing you more harm than good.

Please consult your physio and tell them you want a program and make sure they are aware of everything and everywhere it hurts before and even after exercising.

Good luck!

I have the same problem myself and I find walking is about the best thing you can do. Just start gently on a flat surface and gradually start doing small inclines. You will soon know if you are over doing it because you will get pain in your back thats a warning sign to slow down! I find cycling is also good but again its a matter of taking it slowly to start with you can increase speed and challenge as your fitness level improves. Swimming is probably one of the best you can do because the water supports your whole body as you excercise and you really dont feel as if you are excercising at all (until you get out of the pool!!) I started with aqua aerobics for beginners it was great, less threatening than the gym (there were all shapes and sizes so I felt very comfortable about being chubby!) I also met new people so it was also a pleasant socila activity and I found that I received support and encouragenment from the other people there. Most of all just try I know its scary because of all the fear associated with hurting your back but if you are careful and sensible and heed the warning signs that your body gives you it will be fine. Good Luck
