since the sciatica nerve is a conduit for info, from the lower part of the body the pain signal it transmits is misunderstood by the brain as a pain usually down one side of the body,
physiotherapy can be used to manipulate the spine or build up muscles
any typical anti-inflamitory tablets should help
try this company =ACTICARE TSE

Sciatica is a condition where the verterbrae pinch the Sciatic nerve. You can do this simply by twisting the wrong way or picking up the slightest object. Before you subject yourself to surgery, I suggest that you try a chiropractor. Now days, most insurance covers chiropractors. They do Xray your back before an adjustment and as soon as the bone is put back into place and off the nerve, the pain generally goes away. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose and it sure beats surgery on the back. Very often after surgery, the patient does not recover and further surgery is required. If you are going to have surgery, be sure to research the physician well and find out what his outcomes are. Back surgery is not always the answer and should be the last resort. In addition, they say cold for 20 mins on and off to decrease the edema but those Icy/hot pads are excellent. Good luck....I can feel your pain with this! Oh yes and limit your activity until the episode is over. The more you do the longer the pain will last. You need to rest and recover.

I had crippling sciatica in my 20s and 30s, and then discovered exercise, and have not had that problem in more than a decade. I exercise almost every day, using the back muscles and gluts. I think building up the muscles of the gluts help get the nerve up and off the sciatic notch.
I had not even thought of that pain for so long. I do have somatic memory of it, and it was miserable. When it was so bad, I went to chiropractor and got TENS unit, which helped a lot. If you belong to a gym, ask the trainer what works to build up the muscles along the lower spine and buttocks. I don't do the gym any more, I just ride bicycle, step aerobics and swimming, all in or around the house.
Hard to get started when you are hurting, but it really worked for me. Stay away from the hard core drugs for long term use, they demotivate you to do what will really help the problem.

Sorry babe,
There is no cure sciaticia is a symptom of the cause.
You need an MRI scan on your back ( this penetrates deeply to discover the cause ) then, and only then can you start to treat your problem.
I've had this for well over a year now, I've had my MRI and awaiting results.
Just take Ibuprofen ( this will deflame your muscles ) releasing your nerve and pain for short periods of time whilst your attack is present.
Don't buy these advertised books, or web page ads, they are full of S * * T, they just want your money angel.
Go see your GP and demand an MRI.
Good luck ( I know how you feel ) X X

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Lie flat on your back on a firm flat surface.
Arms tight by your sides, keep elbows on floor and bend arms to touch the shoulders ( left hand, left shoulder; right hand, right shoulder).
Now, keeping elbow in contact with floor, slide one down to hip. First, left elbow to left hip, then right elbow to right hip.
Nice and easy. Feel it pulling your back. Do about fifty.
It may loosen up some painful tightness. You'll look a bit like that wiggle smilie, unless you seize up altogether. The risk is yours.

Read the Georgia Nicolson series. The first is "Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging". It's written like a diary, and it's too funny! The whole series is fantastic.
