It has been male dominated society from the beginning. As earlier men were doing more physical activities and women were staying at home and raising kids.
The reason why it was male dominated society is that the males were able physical labour and other activities, making them physically stronger than women. The women were supposed to give birth to children and raise them. Other reason could be that once a woman is pregnant, she needs to take more rest and take care of herself during those nine months, which would again make sense for male to be more physically strong.
So overall males were dominating the society from the beginning. Hence it was more covenient for them to bring their wives.
