The reason is simple. Many, though not all of the mantras used in the meditative aspect of yoga contain the name of a Hindu deity. Many Christians feel that this is like praying to a pagan god, which is forbidden by the First Commandment

Becoz christianity has this view that it is the only true religion and everything else is the work of the devil. Even if they practice it they will reduce it to a sport or flexibilty excercise when it is an allround holistic experience. One cannot know gods love without knowing themselves first. The real journey is inward not outward.
Only identifying yourself in a christian community is not spiritual when you donot even know yourself. People say their are so many gods in hinduism but they fail to see it is because of the freedom one gets from it and people connect with whichever deity appeals to them. That is why it is more a way of life rather than a religion. They are not worshiping idols. The idol is a visual representation. There is a hindu saying, "Sadhan bina sadnana nahi hoti", which roughly translated means there is no meditation without a medium.
If you truly believe god created everything then you start seeing the divine in all his creations but you have to find yourself first to do that.

As others have said, it's the connection between yoga and hinduism. I don't think yoga is wrong if you take out the hindu parts of it. You can do the poses and breathing while thinking of nothing, or praying. But I respect other Christians not wanting to have anything to do with it.

well i am a christian and i practice yoga with my children, perhaps you have over generalized or it is a fear based approach to something unfamiliar. Peace and balance of mind/body/soul a great stress reliever, builds strength and flex-ability, how can all the be a part of the devil, then i guess all sports can be grouped into that category,

Not all Christians oppose yoga. For example, my mom and I borth practice it daily. It keeps up centered as well as keeps us in shape. Anything that brings you inner peace is definitely not from Satan!

Yoga and all types of meditation lead to demon possession. A friend of mine went to a meditation where he was given a mantra. I was horrified to learn the mantra was the name of a close family relative to him. They told him to keep it a secrete but he told me and I told him he was actually offering that family relative to the devil and she would have died.
