I have tons of DVDs, almost too many to keep track of, but I want to rip them to a hard drive and create a movie server for my house so I don't have to hunt for a dvd everytime I want to watch a certain movie. Is there any way to compress the dvd files into smaller files using compression software or simply ripping them to another format? I have heard of being able to burn 3 full length DVDs to a single DVD using compression, but I don't know how to do it. Could something like that be used?

It depends on your hardware and what you really want to do with your files. In theory yes, you could compress your files to various derivatives of MPEG4 and burn to a single layer DVD.

Also, you could use DVD Shrink, but that isnt true compression so much as shaving off extra features and removing quality from the already-limited MPEG2 format inherent on the discs.

Yes, you could encode it to XviD or whichever codec you choose. But you wouldnt be able to watch them on 99% of the DVD players out there. (do a google check, last I saw there were 3 high end players with DivX codec playing capabilities)

Although if you dont care about using up disk space, rip the entire movie to an ISO form (doesnt matter which, generally) and store on a second hard drive. Rip out the special features you dont care for, and burn at your leisure to a (hopefully) dual layer disc.

The short answer: No, you cant really compress your movies and have quality or extra features like more languages or deleted scenes and whatnot without sacrifice.
