Idolatry is placing importance in someone or something thn in God. An idol can be your job, car, spouse, children, hobbie, a statue, a spirit being etc. The commandment in Ex 20 says
"3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God"

Idolatry is making up a god and putting it in the place of the real one. Idolatry breaks the first three commandments all at once--putting a false god first, making an image to it, and dishonoring the Lord's name. In the New Testament, it says that covetousness is idolatry. This is the last of the Ten Commandments that seems to get the least press. When we want more than we should, it almost always leads to sin. Sin is putting God second, and we're back to idolatry. Simple rule: put God first, then do what He says about treating others right. It's a great start.
