Ice the injury and elevate it on pillows. Try to rest it and not walk around on it. If you take ibuprofen then take it. If not ask your doctor if it is okay. If it feels really bad seek medical attention or the swelling gets bad. Do not apply heat in the beginning. You want to reduce the swelling. Put a towel or cloth between the ice and your skin.

Wrap it with an ace bandage, use ice and use crutches for up to 3-5 days depending on the pain and swelling. I fell down the steps last month and thought my ankle was broke because of the swelling and pain so I spent $75 and went to the ER only to find out it was a bad sprain and the above treatment is all that was provided. Along with some aleve or something like that for the pain.

The best thing that you can do is the following-take anti inflammatories such as Tylenol, Advil, and such. Apply ice for 20 minutes at a time then apply heat for the same amount of time and flop the treatment back and forth a couple of times a day. Rest your foot and prop it up to an elevation above your heart. In a few days you should start noticing a difference. Also try to keep from walking too much on it for the first couple of days.

Many docs still subscribe to wrapping with an ace wrap and loosening it as needed, elevation (above the heart if possible), applying an ice pack to area 20 minutes out of every hour while awake for 24-48 hours then applying heat. Stay off of it as much as you can, use a product like Motrin (Ibuprofen) as directed for pain and inflammation. I hope you feel better soon.

Ice of course, if it is a fresh sprain. After the ice, rest is the real thing needed for healing sprains and bruises.

If you have swelling then alternate ice with heat. That will sooth it some. Take something for pain if needed and keep it proped up for a bit. Use this as an opportunity to relax and watch a little t.v. or read or just nap. You'll be up and hoppin in no time. Hope you get to feelin better. :)

First take off your shoes and socks, next ice it up. Keep circulation free. Then elevate, Lie down and raise above chest level. If it persists, have a physician check it out. No massaging and running through water......I.C.E. -ice, circulation, elevation.....
