I have an interview to teach a Year 1 class, and they have asked me to teach a 15min maths lesson to 12 childre on counting, ordering and sorting numbers. Any good activities?

Am quite surprised that some people have been so negative about this question. I have a whole stash of activities I've built up over my 7 years of teaching but someone else may always have something impressive that would knock an interviewers socks off. If you have nothing constructive to say then don't bother.

Prepare things that help students to understand the counting issues easier... Make pictures more interesting with colourfull pictures and popular cartoons pictures as example... The most important thing is that you make a good preparation on what you are going to show the interviewers...
Children like to learn math if you teach them with pictures, esp, cartoons or animals pictures

I am a student teacher currently (early childhood education) and I have used M&M's and buttons as maninpulatives for counting, ordering, sorting, making shapes, ect. I used this activity in a first grade classroom and the students were able to make addition and subtraction problems right in front of themselves. Many students got creative with their M&M's and made shapes and the actual numbers as well as patterns with the colors of M&M's and shapes/colors of the buttons. What is so wonderful is that you can use objects (manipulatives) for so many things. The students got a big kick out of using the M&M's as a form of mathematics. However, you can use any type of candy or object for counting, ordering and sorting numbers.

Bring a big bag of dried beans. Give a handfull to each student and have them arrange them on a table or their desk in different groups. That is the way I learned numbers. and it can be fun.. Make it a game and give out gold stars for a correct answer.

The only language kids understand is fun.Try and make it fun for them.It may be difficult explaining stuffs to kids but just believe in yourself and don't be too nervous.Goodluck.

Use everyday things like candy. If they get it right, you can give them the candy. Like, subtract this from that, then they get the candy if hey get it right.
