I don't believe you can really call that brainwashing. You are simply a product of the environment under which you were raised. Like it or not, I'm sure you picked up many other traits besides religion. It's natural to question many things regarding how we were raised while growing up and often well into adulthood. Some people spend a lifetime trying to cope with certain issues. You came to make your own free choice about this just like many people break other cycles that occur through generations. I'm not saying you made a good choice, but it was your choice. While living at home as a minor, kids should respect the beliefs of their parents and if that means going to church, then so be it. When we turn into adults, we are given the opportunity to make our own choices.
As a PK (preachers kid) I fully understand what you're referring to and I also came to my own conclusions. I still believe, but I have a difficult time with what I viewed as the hypocracy of church members. As we moved between a few different churches, friendships from those churches died as if they never existed. My lifelong friends today were those made outside of that environment. Very good people, even if not overly religious. "Real" people.
My advice...don't blame your parents for something they truly believed in and honestly felt was the right way to raise kids. It would have been wrong for them to have done anything else. If you find yourself behind socially, then work with it, but don't over do it..as if to make up for lost time. You'll find the correct balance in time. Most of the moral lessons are solid, even for non-religious persons. But, you don't have to be a monk either.

Same here. I actually wanted to go to church when I was a child. We had a very good minister and I wanted to be just like him. As I grew older, I recognised hippocract in the churgh and found that my questions were not adequately answererd. After a lot of though I left. Looking back, I recognise brainwashing as well as threats and promises to keep the congregation in line.

Religion relies totally on brainwashing. It has nothing else to support it.
Additional:
I was born into a Christian family, my grandfather was a Baptist preacher. It didn't make sense to me once I got old enough to question it. And it obviously made no sense to anyone I asked to interpret it because the usual answers were "Take it on faith," or "God works in mysterious ways." Translated into English, that means "I don't know."

Here is why it didnt make sense to you;
The Scriptures tell us that the "natural man" cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God. Most Americans would find it difficult to understand the Chinese language. However, a child who is born into a Chinese family can understand every word. That’s why you must be born again with God’s Spirit living within you (John 3:3). The moment you become part of God’s family, the Bible will begin to make sense

Christianity has been falsely labeled as brainwashing which I believe cults and sects practice this under false leadership. True examples: Jim Jones and David Koresh followers There no such label as "used to be a christian"! You either believe or didn't believe.

You lived in constant guilt 1) because you were guilty, as all of us are, and 2) because you never accepted the forgiveness of God.
Isn't much more comfortable hearing that you do whatever you want with no consequences? Ahh... bliss. You must be so happy now.

Everyone is brainwashed from birth...though they frequently fail to realize it.
To see this, ask yourself why people in one society dress a certain way, talk a certain way, believe certain ideologies, believe certain notions about the relative roles of men and women, like certain types of music, like certain foods, care about certain name brands......compared to people in other cultural milieus.
We are all brainwashed my friend.

The devil himself is a brain washer. He tricks people to do wrong. He makes sin look fun. He does not show you the price you pay for your sin.I have 2 dead cousins because they listened to the devil. He made the beer look good to them. He did not show them they would get killed for drunk driving. So yes my friend. The devil has lots of people brain washed into thinking that they have plenty of time. He tells them to go ahead and have a good time in their sin.
