Moth balls have worked wonderfully for me, just three or four of in the bottom of the can works fine. Keeps dogs, cats, coyote's, and maggots out, and won't knock the garbage man over when opens the lid.

I have a garbage can in the kitchen that has a lid that can only be opened with a foot pedal and that works fine. Don't leave things in the trash can inside of the house that will attract the cat - take all bones and empty cat food cans (things like that) out to the outside garbage can.

One good idea, never keep dead mice in there!Put lemon juice wherever your cat gets in the garbage can, animals hate lemon juice.Or get a new garbage can, there is a type of garbage can that you can step on to make it open and close. When you you let go it will shout kind of tight but you can still open it.But the good thing is it shouts so tight that the cat cant get in,but he/she will try. Or just put a heavy book on top so he/she cant get in.

guess i'd have to say, feed the cat a bit more cat food, so that it wouldn't have to get into the garbage. or stop putting food scraps in the garbage. or get a type of garbage can that has a tighter fitting lid than the norm.

i used this trick with my cats and the christmas tree.... get a spary bottle of water and use it on them whenever you catch them in the garbage... after a while they will learn to hate or be scared of that bottle and you will be able to just sit the spray bottle near the garbage and they'll stay away from it

you can just put something heavy on the top of the lid, the trashmen usually don't seem to mind, that is what i had to do with mine for years because of neighborhood strays
