He has to go through a grieving process, as it does hurt to lose a pet. As someone else suggested, there are lots and lots of unwanted cats at the Shelter, so why not get him one from there, and he can love that one just as much.

each living being has its own life span to expend all its karmas of previous birth. once that quota stipulated for this life is over, death takes it away, only to be reborn and continue the cycle. his cat finished its business on this earth and has left. the faster your friend accepts this bitter reality, easier it becomes for him to move on. give him support and understanding and he will get over it fast.

Just be there for him and give him your shoulder to cry on. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's cat passing.

Get off the computer and be with him! Listen to him. Let him talk. and GET OFF THE COMPUTER! Use your head he's your friend, not a bunch of strangers telling you how to deal with YOUR friend.

Plan an elaborate funeral. It would also help if you could hug your friend.
