For the same reason words like ****, ****, ****, ****, and **** are considered bad. Somewhere along the line, someone decided that they didn’t like it and it was deemed bad. It’s all about censorship and censorship is nothing more than a way to control people.

The use of the middle finger has traditionally been, in almost all cultures a phallic symbol. Because most cultures find such symbolism offensive, it follows that it is an offensive term as well. Additionally, the middle finger was thought by some to be a ward against evil, hence displaying it to an individual could be analogous what some do in the modern day by making the Christian cross with their hands as a sign that an individual is unholy or foul, and whose very presence necessitates the protection of those around him.

Back in the day when archers could win a war, the French would capture British archers, cut off their first and second fingers so they could not draw a bowstring, then release them as a warning.

The Brits who still had their fingers would show them to the French as a taunt.

In the US, it evolved into one finger.

Because adults teach us at an early age that it is bad. Think about it this way, if the adults wouldn't teach each kid not to do it, it would not be bad anymore. We wouldn't do it and we wouldn't even know what it means.
