Probably the best commercial one at the moment is McAfee. You might also like AVG from Grisoft. There is a free version available.

Norton Antivirus will do the job, too, but unfortunately a lot of people have problems with it. It is commonly said to have become too large, slows down the PC and interferes with some programs.

Two answers:

FREE PROGRAMS (search the web and download for free):
ANTI VIRUS: AVAST Anti Virus, or AVG anti virus.
FIREWALLS: Zone Alarm, Sygate or the Windows one that came with your computer.
SPY WARE: Microsoft Windows Defender, Spybot or Adaware.

NOT FREE:
ANTI VIRUS: McAfees, Norton's (not a big fan of Nortons)
FIREWALLS: Zone Alarm
SPY WARE: Webroot's Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor

There are lots more, some people have strong beliefs which are the best or the worst programs. Try the free stuff first. Want a all in one program, there is McAfee and Nortons, but you are going to pay, you choice. Enjoy your computer by the way.

I used Symmantec for a while, but it is a real memory hog that slowed my system down considerably, then a couple weeks ago ran into a virus of its own. I switched recently to AVG, a free system (that you can also purchase). Now my system is much faster, and just as well protected. When in doubt, I run anti-spy off the Yahoo toolbar.

Linux/Debian, any GNU OS on a dual boot is the most productive and so far virus free OS to date. Mac is also good from the OS part.
Far as AV, well the Windows are the worst attacks, is because that OS comes pre-installed from most PC vendors. so the sheer volume of them is incentive to malicious code writers to get into and cause damage or snoop around.
If yuo buy a new PC Microsoft prolly allready has them tagged, wich means you are tagged so acccept it, then grab a Linux Distro and start learning what real Code and Electronic Computing is.

Keep a back up of all of your programs, expecially windows and learn how to format your computer. The biggest problem these days is freeware/pop ups. It slows down your computer. Just format and reinstall all of your stuff every 3 months or so. You computer will run like new every time you do so.

McAfee is good (buy and then renew yearly).

Also,
AVG is free and good.
Ad-aware is free and good.
Spysweeper gives a free trial and is good.
Kaspersky allows single virus scans without purchase - if you have a problem.
If there is a particular virus issue - Symantec has free fix downloads - they are excellent.

Norton is the best... forget the free ones.. just slow your computer down. AD-AWARE SE is very good too.. download it free from its website. also WINDOWS Defender* is very good too.. run all three together... make sure you use Nortons built in Firewall........also, it automatically updates at a time you set...
(*get win def, from microsoft website...)
make sure you update/run them every week, and run ad-aware scan, just before you finish on your pc for the day...
