I would like to cry with joy with the news that the US troops are all coming home right now. Instead a bunch of fools are outside shooting off fireworks. Now I know that is their right and I used to do that too. It is just somehow I can't get to sleep and I can't relax and I can't do anything much with the sounds like gunfire and mortar fire going off, just outside my window.
It has been quite a few years since Vietnam. You think I would get over it. Yet we keep going to war and we veterans keep reliving it. We keep making new veterans, too. One in three Iraqi war vets are already seeking psychiatric aid. War does something to you. Hard to describe. Not something you get over easily. My job in the Army? I burned crops and people to death. Yeah, real sweet stuff. They gave me some medals for it: a Bronze Star, five Air Medals, two Army Commendations, etc. I was tortured. They broke my knee. The VA has taken 30 years to finally recognize that as service connected, but I am still lucky.
I am in pain, you know, but I am not suffering. Suffering means that this is unbearable. I am handling it. The nightmares and all and the survival guilt -- some of my buddies did not make it back. But I do wish I could cry with joy. I do wish we would stop fighting to protect contractors making money for Haliburton in a nation where we are not wanted. Some of those kids went to school with my daughter.
Well, sorry this is a little long. I will take something and try to get to sleep. Just know that war wounds are deeper than they appear. Welcome home, Veteran Brothers and Sisters.
