The real purpose in life, most apparently, is to die, often in a very painful manner. Life at its core is relentlessly tragic. The German philosopher, Shopenhauer, suggested that human beings should stop reproducing and let our species die out. There is one other solution proposed, and that is a spiritual one. There are many remedies available, some fradulent, but the one I find most suitable for modern times is Theravadan Buddhism.
