I understand the reason why handguns are illegal, but the outcome has been that we have a system in which only criminals carry handguns. Is this sensible?

The law may have prevented more dunblane type incidents (but there is more to that incident than meets the eye. but its a secret for 100 years), but more people have been killed by hand guns since their total ban, than before. If I was to suggest a law that only allows dangerous and violent criminals to carry handguns, people would think I was mad, but that is EXACTLY the situation we have here and gun crime is getting much much worse.

Of course not.The government introduced the hand gun law to appease the News of The World, and the rest of the gutter press.

It might have prevented more incidents like the Dunblaine massacre, however due to the low incidence of these events we won't be able to say whether or not it has had an effect or not for several more years.

No it is not. In fact may come to find out how stupid it is when a criminal breaks into your house. I understand almost any weapon is outlawed in England including swords. I don't know about you but I like to be able to defend myself.
