Yes it is great...start low...you will be amazed at the deals you can get. I got a roundtrip ticket for 150 that would have cost me normally 300. See the worst that could happen is they accept your bid. Its not like you are obligated beyond that. The only time you are going to pay is if they accept your price. So start low...

Flights...beware of red-eye flights, numerous transfers, and inconvenient flight times. These are usually flights no one else wants.

Hotels...beware that you will likely end up in a smoking room. If you don't mind that, Priceline is an awesome way to book a hotel.

Rental car....Priceline is absolutely the best deal out there. I always get a cheaper rate on a bigger car, and sometimes I even get upgraded for free.

I've only bid on hotels - I haven't gotten up the guts to try the airfare.
But I did get a room @ the Hyatt on Wacker in Chicago for $80 - normally $165+++

Just be sure that you understand, what is booked cannot be canceled or changed. They have the guidelines that you can set, but they don't always match them, they try harder to match your price. So, if you aren't real concerned with what you get, than you should be fine. But, if you are looking for something in particular, you may want to buy direct.
