yes, they're underripe tomatoes, tho you can use ones that are almost ripe, but not fully turned red yet. Here in the south you can get them ready to fry in the frozen food section of some stores. No, they're not bitter, frying them brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes. Here is a great recipe for fried green tomatoes that my mom makes.

Slice the green tomatoe into even slices like you would for a sandwich, about a 1/4inch. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and allow to stand for a few minutes. Dip each slice in corn meal and lay aside on waxed paper. In a heavy cast iron or heavy bottomed skillet, heat cooking oil and fry tomatoes until golden brown on each side. Remove to paper towels to drain excess oil.

Do not fry ripe tomatoes. It doesn't work well at all.
Slice green tomatoes paper thin, like a potato chip. Dip sliced green tomatoes in water, put in Ziploc bag with a few tablespoons of flour plus pepper, cajun seasoning, and seasoned salt. Shake till tomatoes are covered.
Fry in hot oil -- a Fry Daddy works best.

I just wanted to ask if you've ever seen the movie fried green tomatoes. With Kathy Bates? It's a really weird movie.

yes they are just regular underripe tomatoes. i have never seen them at the store you probably just have to pick your own.. they are not bitter, they are a bit sour, but cooking them makes them yummy.
