Most likely everybody beleives to be smart. Ithas nothing to do with ego it is to do with your inner dialogue say you meet this individual very smart, sophisticated and cutured two things will come to mind you will either consider him a peer because you have seen teh extent of his brilliance or you will be in awe of his genius but will have some criticism towards him no matter how litle this criticism might be it can only mean that you noticed a flaw in him. Ergo he is either yopur peer or sligtly below you.

I would like to believe I am reasonably intelligent, wise enough to know many are much more intelligent than myself, arrogant enough to make fun of many people who post here that can't/won't even try to spell correctly.
