I use hand wraps and good gloves but only the last 2 months have i had this pain, during and long after.

I use my right hand more, so am more co-ordinated with that, and hit harder with it, but my left is one giving me trouble.

i dont wanna do serious damage, and the pain does mean i dont hit as hard or as much.

i have had long breaks where i dont hit (weeks), and as soon as i hit again it starts to hurt

anyone have any ideas what im doing wrong, or not doing, that causes this?

It sounds as if you have either a stress fracture or tendonitis, you would still be able to move the finger with both but it would act up when you use it.

Try some Ibuprofen {Advil, Motrin etc..} before you use the hand as it will help with any swelling & pain but not interfere with anything else. After practice ice for 20 minutes then rest it for 45 and do that 2 or 3 times after each practice. Also check your form when you punch make sure that finger isn't out further than the rest and that you are punching squarely. If the pain continues and you can find no problems with your punching style go to the Doctor and get an x-ray.

Your left hand finger is more prominent, and it will always place pressure on that finger as you hit your target. Tommy Hearns and alot of big punchers have hand injuries due the huge demands you place of your hand when it makes contact. Strapping might alleviate the problem. Exercise the arm to take the shock and tension out as the pressure like a gun recoils and releases energy ruining back up your arm, instead of going directly into your knuckle.

The only thing i can think of is ur not making ur fist correctly with that hand like that finger sticks out more and takes most of the impact or u've injured this finger before or recently or both.
