Native grasses do not hold the soil as well as a grass lawn, resulting in erosion. Native grasses also attract pests such as snakes, rats, mosquitoes, and other vectors. Other grasses remove nutrients better than native grasses.
On the other side, I am against applying commercial fertilizer and pesticides to lawns. People tend to over fertilize and over-water their lawns and the excess nutrients end up running off into sorm drains and streams. There are more natural ways to fertilize your lawn and to keep pests at bay.
Native grasses have their place in rural settings that help support habitat for certain species.

A proper green grass because it gives children a place to play close to home. Also I guess this doesn't count, but I have yet to see anybody who has tried to implement a native landscape or something more natural have anything than a wild mess that looked terrible. And while I suppose people feel that we should retain native plants, the native plants would have continued to evolve and change without us here. With our small square patches of lawn at home, we will still be able to enjoy them in parks and at the beach and other places.

A well kept native landscape makes more sense. Just keep it clean, green and trimmed. Nothing beats the natural!!! All you need is a set of garden tools that are used manually.
The "proper" green grass lawn will get much of your time. You will also spend for your mower. Conserve energy.

Native landscape. I am in Vegas. We are in a horrible draught and buying water from Arizona. We don't have enough to water a bunch of green grass. My Mom lives in what she calls "The Big Empty" and it's about like this only her state is better off. Mom has the native landscape. It's better for the environment. Forget the grass. We need water and when is the good stuff going to dry up and we have to drink who knows what?

Native landscape. It is more natural. Taking into consideration the life of nature, such as nature spirits and the like it far more harmonius to have a native landscape. Also cutting or damaging plants as little as possible will cause these 'spirits' more comfort and you will have a better landscape, more hardy to.
On a more ecological level one should avoid alien species in your area. They usually look great but create problems as they do not have any natural enemies and can easily take over a native landscape and kill off indigenous or endemic species. Aliens will also attract organisms that shouldn't be there. Again disrupting the natural web of life.

The most sense is that which is more sustainable - costs less to maintain and is less invasive to the native environment. In that sense, a native landscape makes more sense. But, just because you utilize native plants and a design that follows the landscape, doesn't mean you can't arrange in a pleasing manner with certain embellishments to add some vive to the arrangement.

it depends on where you are. in a state like Michigan a lawn would probably be best as there is plenty of water for it, but someplace like Utah, where most of the state is a desert, you would want to have the native landscape that would not use up the precious water supply.

I like the native landscape, I don't like looking out my window and seeing an imitation golf course. The things that are supposed to grow there are the things that grow best, and they grow to height God intended them to.
