Adorama is a decent camera store in Southern California. The digital camera you buy may have a lot to do with what film camera you have. If you have a 35 mm SLR camera with lots of lenses, you might want to buy a camera that can take those lenses. Thus, I bought a Canon EOS digital camera (there are several models varying in price from approximately $850 to $3,500 or so), whereas my brother bought a Nikon because he had Nikon lenses. The people at the camera store can advise you and let you take some photos. Mini cameras that are simpler and have their own built-in lenses are a different story. I personally have a Canon Digital Elf 4.5 5 megapixel camera that I love. It has a very large 2" screen with brightness control. It is extremely easy to use and takes excellent photos.

Okay Pooky, a Hasselblad is a great camera, but a person needs a fortune to buy one! :)
So! To the question!
Nikon and Canon are the leaders in the DSLR market, and are usually in stock at any camera store. There is really no "best" camera, as they all have their good and bad points. You'll have to handle each one to get your feel for the one you like.
A true "pro" camera costs $5,000 and up, so watch out! :)

It depends on what you are looking for in a camera. Sony is known for its many features and functionalities. Canon has less features, but it is relatively easy to use and very reliable. I currently use a Canon, which is very reliable. My old Sony is features rich, but I find it a little perplexing.

Check out Casio. They have the most bang for your buck. The battery last the longest and they are easy to use. The movie feature is excellent too. They are available at most camera stores, but I got mine at Costco.
