Story (as in storybook/fairytale) = hikâye

krallicatabiaa is correct about Joe's answer - some of them are odd words indeed. To give details, as I understand them:

HİKÂYE - the most useful day-to-day word for 'story'
ÖYKÜ - also a good word to use. It's 'pure Turkish' where hikaye is an imported word.
MASAL - useful for 'fairytales' like Aesop and the Brothers Grimm
RİVAYET - this is an older word. I think it means 'rumour' as per 'söylenti' below, but I'm not sure.
MARTAVAL - I've never heard this word before in my young life...
SÖYLENTİ - 'rumour' is the main usage of this word.
EFSANE - 'legend', as in Hercules
MAKALE - I only know this word to mean 'article' as in the newspaper.
KAT - quite irrelevant as, as kraljicatabiaa points out, it means layer or floor.
