good question. I wondered this myself, and I'm in the minority you mentioned. I think it is because the American people have been taught to only care about what goes on inside their circle. What happens in other countries is often of no concern to them, if it is not directly affecting them. I can't really tell you why there is so much ignorance, but it sure does bug the heck out of me. I traveled to Europe a few years ago, and realised how aware, and intelligent the European people are. They're on top of current events, and care about what happens in the rest of the world. I think this is partly geographical. We're isolated with only Canada and Mexico as neighbours, and Europe is like a huge bowl of potpourri ! For example, someone who lives in Austria, is going to know what goes on in Switzerland and Italy, they won't be clueless to what's happening. Also, Europeans receive good news on the television and in newspapers. Sometimes it is biased, but at least the people in Europe are being informed of world issues. Here, they only show national issues [with the exception of the papal election and the tsunami]. That really creates ignorance, since the evening news is the most common way to find out about current events. So in some way, the crappy media is to blame. If I want to know anything, I have to watch or listen to the BBC. It really is awful that Americans don't even want to try to edge out of isolationism.

Americans, especially the "Majority"(not calling any names, they know who they are) are also oblivious to their ways and like to pretend that they don't notice their own faults when people complain about them or point them out. So I'm sure you got a ton of answers with Americans denying that the united states is like this, not all of them are the same, or they didn't "notice" what you were talking about.... The worst kind of arrogance causes you to still look in the mirror and believe you have flawless skin with a face full of scars.

Not all of us are like that. the people I'm around most of the time are very caring but that isn't everybody and it's every country that is like that there are people who are caring and considerate to how others feel and then there are people who don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. it's the same way even in England and every where around the world (:

You are true, it's a sad reality. Maybe because the average american don't travel a lot so everything they know comes from the media, and they don't read a lot either. They have been brain- washed by their system that make them believe that they are superior and better than the other countries... but the reality is that they are ignorant ... I feel so sorry for them.
May God bless America!

It's our slow drip of high-fructose corn syrup and fluoride that causes brain melt, especially when coupled with the onslaught of sensory carnage from our media as we march in goose-step to the mind numbing drone of religious doctrine as our politicians attempt to manipulate our mass consciousness.
