I will go pick up my new maltese puppy in 2 weeks at LAX. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on all the things I should have before PEGASUS gets here to be prepared.
Thanks

Maltese puppies, like any small breed puppy, need to eat a little bit every 2-4 hours to keep their blood sugar constant. They have very little body fat, so they cannot store sugar to use later. Playing uses up sugar fast. These tiny breeds have a tendancy towards hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.) Get a tube of glop called "Nutrical." Between meals, give the puppy about as much Nutrical as you'd put toothpaste on your toothbrush. It has it has vitamins and sugars in it that help prevent hypoglycemia. If she won't eat, you'll have to force feed by taking a tiny bit of wet food on your finger and wiping it inside her mouth onto her hard palate. Make sure she swallows it so that you don't choke her. Try to get the same food that the breeder was feeding, as she's used to it. Take her to a vet within the first 3 days of having her to get her checked out and for a fecal test for internal parasites. Make sure you bring with you any paperwork from the breeder so that they know what shots and dewormers have been given. If she is vomiting, listless, has diarrhea, or is not eating, make a point to get to the vet within 24 hours. If you want to come to the hospital where I work, email me. We are in Los Angeles near the 10 freeway and La Cienega.

If it is your first puppy you must realize that it is similar to a baby. You should be prepared to train Pegasus not only for elimination of house "accidents" but also for obedience. I made the mistake of not doing the latter, and ten years later I have somewhat of a "brat" maltese but we love him dearly.

Most maltese (especially the males) are hyper and are barkers..........nothing much you can do about that. Pay attention to your maltese and give Pegasus love and make sure he is exercised once in a while. You won't have to worry about cleaning up hair because they do not shed.

As for feeding, we mix dry dog food (eukonuba) with some mighty dog. They love treats and are very playful, especially in their early years. Enjoy.

Buy the food, a baby gate, dog tray, a few dog toys and puppy treats and get recommendations from friends for a good vet.

Good planning! Buy Dr. Ian Dunbar's book Everything you need to know before and after you get a puppy. Use Positive, reward based clicker training. Join yahoo group Clicker Solutions. Feed only high quality food not sold in supermarkets or big box stores. Some good foods are by Merrick, Chicken Soup fo the dogs soul, Solid Gold, AvoDerm, California Wellness. Make sure to get him checked by a good vet as soon as you get him. Have fun and love him.

well the main things that any new puppy should have coming in a new home is...food and water bowls...plenty of toys...a collar and a leash...and ID tag...and just plain LOVE!!!!!! but one tip is not to put a puppy on a leash until they are about 6 - 10 months because they might hurt thier neck or something may happen...even then I wouldn't take the pup on a very long walk MAYBE like 30 minutes but if he gets mad then come back but the starting time on walking should be 30 minutes then jst add about 5 minutes each time until you get to about an hour! email me anytime @ pupluver0092@ yahoo.com

First puppy proof your house by making sure your dog wont chew nothing electrical and items that may be harmful to it. After that then go to your local petstore such as petco. Buy some basic necessary supplies. Crate, food and water bowl, bed, collar, leash, food, grooming, toys, books, and treats. If you have money, fill up the shopping cart with every thing like i do. when its home, take it to the vet, vaccinate it depending on age, and take it to classes at petco. hopefully my information helps you and your pet have a better time together. i have dogs and cats that are spoiled rich. they get whatever they want...

I hope that all works out well for you. Before purchasing another dog from a breeder who ships a puppy alone cross-country, please consider adopting or finding a more reputable breeder. It helps to prevent more unwated pets from being killed.
