Yes they can sue.
As far as what they would get depends on your state exemption statutes.
If your home, car, husbands wages etc are exempt, they probably can do nothing. You should find out what the exemptions for your state are.
One suggestion though, if you have a bank account, you might think about closing it and only have your husband on the account. Or open a shared account that lists your husband as primary.
You might check out the link I've listed and do some reading. There is a ton of information on that site. Not only for general credit problems, but medical credit problems (plus many other credit related forums) You can also find links to your states exemption laws and statutes.
edited to add: you should also do as a previous poster recommended, contact the hospital and find out what programs are out there to help you pay. There are many programs/charities that will help if you are low income. The hospital will have a listing of them.

Yes the hospital can sue you, you say you don't work but if you are still married they will go after your husband and it will be on your credit report as well as his or they can take out a lein against this bill either toward your property or your husbands paycheck. If you only pay them $10 a month that shows that you are trying. I am someone who has had millions of medical bills in the past. I had to sell my homes, cars, and art in order to pay these off, they gave me time, as long as I was paying something every month. I made them aware that I was selling property to cover these costs. If you don't pay this bill off and it is the only hospital in your area, and they are a private hospital they can deny you care in the future. Also some doctors will not take you as a new patient if there are unpaid medical bills. There are organizations that help people pay medical bills, I would go to your local social service agency and see if in any way they can help get this paid.

My boyfriend has many hospital bills! many of them are years old, and no one has ever done anything but send the bills every month. So I don't think so, because it's medical. But most hospitals have programs that you can sign up for, like a grant that pays your bill for people like you. I would call the Hospital and explain your situation to them. And ask if there is any thing they could do to help because you can't afford to pay anything. But at least call and talk to them about it, and just ask if any legal action will be filed against you for not paying. Good Luck

No they will not sue you but your credit score will go down the tube. If you cant pay the bill they will turn you into collections and they can garnish your wages when you do get a paying job.

Our hospital bills are hopelessly high due to my hubby's heart surgeries and have been with collection agencies for years now.... We pay a minimum amount to the Drs. and hospital each month and have not been sued yet. I think as long as you pay a little each month they can't sue. Good luck and try not to let it stress you too much.

I went though this once and the collection agency did take me to court. But all I ended up paying was $5.00 a month. I was a student at the time and was recieving child support.

If you do'nt have the money all they can do is harrass you. Ther is'nt a debtors prison anymore. I would try to apply for medical assistance through public aid and Medicare. If you apply and let them know about your past bills may be you will be approved for medical assistance. I would try it if I were you,"Nothing beats a failure, but a try".

If you call them and work something out where you pay them anything and let them know your situation, I think you can avoid it.
