How can you determine that you no longer need antidrepressants? I heard you just can't stop taking them altogether. Does your body develop a need for them? Will you be able to function normally without them?

My dear friend tells me that you do develop a need for higher and higher doses of anti-depressant OR you have to keep changing the types of anti-depressants you use because your body becomes "immune" to them.

She won't get off of them, but with a doctor's guidance, I think you could try to slowly get off them, and try a period of time without them to see how you do.

You need to talk to your doctor. If your depression is all better and you are feeling good, you may be able to gradually taper the dose. You need your doctor's help with a schedule for tapering the medication because you can get real bad side effects from some of them if you stop them "cold turkey".

Well, for me, I weaned myself off of them. I was suppossed to take them everyday. I cut down to once a week, then once every other week, then about once a month. Finally, I just quit taking them. I knew that I didn't need them anymore once I wasn't feeling depressed. I've been off of them for 8 months and I'm doing fine.

Oh, I better add, I was on them for postpartum depression. I didn't go to a doctor, but you should if you just have depression. Your doctor will be able to help better than Yahoo.

You definitely should not go off them without the supervision of a physician. My uncle did and ended up committing suicide.

Be careful and listen to your doctor.
