one stroke, ball hit twice. whats the stroke number?

today i went golfing with my brother, we're both amateurs. on the last hole i was about 4 feet off the green. i used a number 12 finesse wedge. i took a crappy swing and hit the ground before i hit the ball. on my follow through i hit the ball again. so on one stroke i hit the ball twice. does that count as 2 strokes or 1?????

If a player’s club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all.

a ball hit twice is 2 strokes. Surprisingly this happens quite often especially on chip shots from high grass similar to your situation. I have even seen it happen on the PGA Tour.

I think its how many swings you took. If its one swing and hit the ball twice, its one stroke.
