I like when the guys call me babe or sweetheart. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I think it is just a figure of speech, but some women get very irate at hearing it as they feel it is a put down. I don't mind it at all. I say hun to both men and women and it is not a flirting thing, it just comes out naturally as a figure of speech. (I am a married woman btw)

it may have been flirtatious a few decades ago..but now, some women may find it offensive, especially younger women. I assume you were born in 1948? So if you say stuff like that, I would recommend doing so to women of your generation rather than say, the Generation X crowd. If am older guy said that to me, I would probably say "ew...creep!" or something like that. Sometimes, I see it as a little bit demeaning (not quite sure why). I guess I find it a little presumptuous. Of course, this is just one woman's perspective!

depends on where you were raised. My family in Maryland calls everyone 'hun'. I work with a girl that is from the south and she calls everyone 'dear'. It can be a term of endearment but it depends on who you are saying it to. Sounds like it's just the way you were raised and it's innocent but if you say it to someone that isn't from the same place you are, they might not take it as innocently. I would refrain from using it in the workplace because like some said, people might take it offensively. If you are interacting with your friends and they know that's just your personality, i wouldn't worry that much about it

Well I don't know how old you are but have you ever been a server/waiter. I've notice people in that profession(my self included) do that. If you feel like your flirting you probably if you don't then drop using the babe phrase and most women will find it charming. So may find it in formal and coarse....talk softly and carry a big stick..

Presentation is everything. I think it really depends on how you say it and what your intention is behind the statement.
Try using her name and giving a genuine compliment. I don't like it when a stranger uses sweetheart or dear or babe -- tend to think they want something from me.

It's certainly not effective flirting, if it's that. I am not a stranger's 'dear' or 'sweetheart' or 'babe' and don't particularly appreciate strange men calling me that. I have a name. It's ok if people call me by it.

only you know if you are floating with them , personally I would not care but in this day of sexual harrassment suits you have to be careful what you say- if you truly can not remeber some one's name tell them - " i apologize , but I am not good with names , do you mind me calling you dear, sweetheart etc..."

I'm not a female, but I'll take a stab.
It just depends. I also use those terms, and I'm certainly not meaning to flirt.
Some ladies take offence, some don't.

Probably would depend on the girl... some might think it was flirting, and some might think you were just a bit off... ;-)
