Keep it from jumping off of things and the other big thing is to discourage people from picking it up, unless you instruct them it the proper lifting and putting down. Training your family to pick the dog up by supporting the whole body and to let it down ALL the way to the floor when putting it down is best. We raised miniature dachshunds and we had one (she was young) that would run outside and jump off a deck 4 feet up. This hurt her back and we took her to the vet and she had to have shots. You can tell when the back hurts, they will limp or yelp when you go to pick them up. Watch the weight too, the pups we raised seemed to gain more weight if they got fixed? We went home and trained her not to jump off of high places (Of course she still jumped off the couch) and we also trained the family not to lift or set her down wrong. She still had and has problems with her back but she is 16 years old and sleeping on the floor behind me right now.

So train it right and train your family right and you will have a great dog. The father of this dog lived to be 20 years old and never had a back problem and her mother lived to be about 15 yrs. old and only had a little so don't worry, just teach your dog that it can not fly and it will be fine.

Your dachshund won't need to have her spine checked routinely if she is kept from jumping off high places, such as a bed, and if she isn't allowed to get overweight.
Your vet will palpatate her spine when she goes in for routine vaccinations. That should be enough unless she is acting weak in her hind legs.
Keep her on a premium kibble, such as Solid Gold, Innova, Welness, Wysong, or Canidae. Optimum nutrition is your best investment,

i would start about 6 months of age and have an x-ray every couple of years. Some breeders guaratee their dogs and x-ray their hips before they breed them. get more background info on parents through a pedigree search. These problems are hereditary. Limping and slight fevers are common. also they dont like anyone touching their rear end
