To an extent...
you can train yourself to "sleep" with your eyes open... but you never enter REM (rapid eye movement) and therefore it's not true sleep... your brain is not able to process what you've experienced and therfore it is not a healthy practice...
people who are able to do this, are actually hyponotising themselves and putting themselves in a very relaxed state...
Most people who have acheived this can not maintain the state for more than a few hours and certainly not rely on this state for more than 3 days... the mind must have REM sleep to remain alert. Without REM sleep, you eventually will lose you mind.

hmmm.. no... you will not learn to sleep with your eyes open.. but.. you WILL learn to be able to grab needed sleep under some of the strangest situations.. and wake up fast when needed.. example:
I learned to sleep next level down from the flight deck underneath the number 2 wire on a aircraft carrier (the one that all the landing planes aim for with their tail-hook) .. which is about like sleeping inside a 55-gallong drum with people hitting it every few seconds with a hammer....oh.. and the reels for the wires make a lot of noise rewinding the wire too!
strange part... when my electronic watch alarm went off.. it would wake me up!

Lying. What will happen is in the battlefield you will adapt and not sleep as deeply so you will awaken more quickly if need be. You learn to sleep anyplace at any time when you can.

Hairy 1 is right. You learn to sleep anywhere, anytime you can. I slept on a metal box next to an active runway once.

They do train you to function, however minimally, on little sleep. I dunno about sleeping with your eyes open, but I think that's how cracked out you will feel after they keep you awake doing grunt work. I think they only make the special forces and navy seal type fools do the no sleep thing too... regular troops get their sleep I think.
