The scales can be a dangerous thing - the self-esteem of many people rise and fall with what they see on their scales.

Authorities have given us Ideal Body Weight and BMI charts to tell us if we are less than ideal. Can we really trust these charts?

They don't take into account any of the following:

Muscle mass - the same volume of muscle weighs more than the equivalent volume of flesh. This explains why some people who seem to be smaller - actually weigh more.

Water retention

Bone density

Genetic body type factors

Ethnic / racial characteristics
So-called 'ideal body weight' is just a bit unreliable! Better measures would be your overall health or fat/skinfold tests.

Weighing yourself everyday can play some real mind-games - our bodies fluctuate a couple of pounds all the time.

It depends on how tall you are. When I was 14, I was 5'5 and weighed around 100-105lbs! I'm 22 now so i can't remember the exact weight!

How tall is the fourteen-year old? What body type are they? Very slim and lean, or stocky and muscular?
This is something to check out with a public health nurse, or with your doctor.

Well, It depends on the height, sex, family past, and body type of the child. I would ask my childs doctor, and they will give you a good idea.
