I believe that Monet chastized Van Gogh over his liberal use of expensive paint. Their lives intersected but Van Gogh was older.

Look under the "Transitional Artist" section of the Wikipedia article I've linked below. It says that while in Paris, Van Gogh met several of the impressionists, including Monet.

I think they may have: I remember studying art in school and discussing the similarities of their paintings. They would actually produce new paintings in response to the other's work.
