Moon Doggie was a character in the movie Gidet. A teenager (played by Sally Field) wanted to learn to surf. Moon Doggie was a surfer bum that hung out on the beach. He taught Gidet to surf and fell for her. This movie was part of the beach movie craze in the 1960's. In the 1980's Gidget and Moon Doggie got married and had kids, in a short lived sitcom.

In the Japanese Animi show Ereka 7 Moon Doggie is a character on board the Gecko. The show is based on robotic mecha that surf on ley lines, so it is a good name for a character.

There was this old tv show Gidget with a character named Moondoggie... maybe it is even before that... I dunno.

I think it is like a nickname... like how we use dog these days... I mean... wtf is a SnoopDogg? It's just an old school character from some surfer shows or movies.
