Generally, how are Coast Guards viewed by other military branches? Like, i heard the Navy and the Marines usually get along with each other. Is there a great respect, or a sentiment of inferiority b.w the C. Guards and other branches? I was thinking of joining.

If you are interested in the mission of the Coast Guard, then go for it. Each branch of service has a different mission. Don't worry about what sailors and soldiers think of the Coast Guard if that is what you want to do.

I Leave in sept for boot camp in the coast guard. Many people call us puddle jumpers and everything else. They think we are like the slacker branch. Which is a bunch of B/s. Alot of people in the other braches don't get alone with us. Some in the other branches do not recognize us as part of the military. But Rather they like it or not we are. Put it this way. You will do more in the coast guard. They are smaller so you have a better chance to be recognized. You also move up rank faster. Our coast needs guarded everyday. So there is always something for us to do. Instead of waiting around to be deployed. Besides we need to keep the other branches deployed over seas, and not deployed at home. They protect us over seas, while we protect there homes.

I was a Navy Chief Petty Officer and served for over 20 years. I can say without hesitation that the United States Coast Guard, while not normally a branch of the armed forces (it's actually now a part of the Department of Homeland Security and when I was in the Navy it was under the Department of the Treasury), is comprised of some of the finest, most courageous and dedicated men and women in the world and they have earned my utmost respect and gratitude for their service to this country.

On a daily basis, these men and women place themselves in harms way to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States, to preclude the entry of any terrorists into our country and to enforce International and maritime law within the territorial waters of the United States of America. they are generally who I call the "forgotten majority" and they perform their duties without fanfare and, in most cases, without any form of thank you or gratitude whatsoever.

We in the Navy used to lovingly refer to the Coast Guard as the "Brown Water (i.e., close to shore) Navy" and would jokingly tease our brothers and sisters incessantly. But make no mistake, no sailor in the United States Navy would ever question the value, courage or commitment of our comrades in arms, the United States Coast Guard. It is our smallest military branch. I have never heard another military person criticize the Coast Guard. Yesterday I went to the Tall Ships race & got to see 6 Coast Guard ships, One was the big battle cruiser-it was huge. I felt respect for them in their white uniforms. They rescued a lot of people during the hurricanes.
My friend's son is in Coast & loves it, he just resigned.
