My father-in-law had his last kidney taken out on June 6, 2006. He has not recovered from this surgery. He is still in the hospital and is not doing well at all. He is out of his mind and does not know any of us. Well, he comes and goes with knowing people. They have ran lots of test on him and have found NOTHING... We don't know if his body has went into shock from haveing no kidneys or if he is not going to be one that can do the dialysis.

I am a rare person that has been on hemodialysis and in complete kidney failure and today my kidneys are completely recovered. If you want to know what it's like to be on dialysis then I'd be glad to speak with you about that, but I sense your issues are far greater than what I can offer. What helped me while I was on dialysis was the DaVita patient organization. Try the website and see if you find something there that helps. Good luck

Kidney dialysis is a risky thing for even those with ONE bad kidney or at least one remaining kidney. Our kidneys filter the impurities from our bodies.

Although people have lived (survived) with having ONE kidney, the prognosis is minimal without a transplant. Given the rate of infections, disagreeable shunts, the level of proteins and potassium levels are more than someone can handle.

Without a kidney at all, dialysis is a temporary thing, and NOT a solution.

I am in awe that both kidneys have been removed. They must have been cancerous and could lead to other health issues?

Kidney transplant is a lengthy process and a very long waiting list. Without a family donor your Father in Law may not survive.

It is direr and urgent that you seek a blood test to see if you have any blood relatives to donate a kidney to him. It has to be blood typed for acceptance.

Please talk to his Doctor to see if your Father in Law is a candidate for a transplant? If he is then start right away by asking all the family to be tested and blood typed.

Good luck to him.
