It's a very technical endeavor to find out why a machine might be repeatedly freezing up. When a machine freezes, it is usually caught in some kind of endless loop of instructions it cannot get out of.

The easiest way would be to backup all your valuable data files off the drive, then re-install the operating system from your recovery disks or OS disks, if you have them. Reinstall your apps, restore your data files, and go.

The hard way would be to try to find the pattern of what program(s) you are running when the lockup occurs, if possible. Also, run the machine in Safe Mode and see if the lockups occur. If the lockups stop, then some component of the operating system is causing the problem, or a hardware driver.

Most of the time your computer freezes because you lack enough RAM (Random Access Memory) to complete the tasks that you are doing. Increasing your RAM to its maximum capacity will help. Also do a disk clean up on a regular basis. Try to keep from running too many applications at one time (i.e windows media player, the internet, powerpoint, etc)
They eat up your resources and cause the computer to freeze on occassion. Also uninstall any applications that you do not use that takes up a lot of memory on your computer.
Hope this helps.

I am a computer technician as a job and this is a veerrry common problem with alot of answers because it could be a bunch of different problems, for one you may not have enough ram to support all of the applications in the background (the ones behind the scenes) or you may have a virus i recommend scanning for one with a antivirus program, nortorn antivirus is good but for free you can scan at www.pandaantivirus.com/activescan and finally you may just have alot of spyware a good program to run weekly to prevent that is spybot search and destroy you can get that at downloads.com search for spybot s-d but it could also be a number of other things that make it freeze are there any error messages? ill try to help if you can catch me when I'm online --dillusionalmonkey

Your comp might be over heating. Try taking off the side panel to allow it to stay cooler.

Also, you use up too many resources and the comp can't do anymore work. This means when you do a lot of things on the comp, it gets too confused and freezes. Reboot before an important session.

Try reducing the Hardware Acceleration
Right click anywhere on your desktop

It will bring up your display properties,
Go to the settings tab,
Click on the advanced button
Click on the Troubleshoot Tab, you will see a slider bar from Full til none, move it down one slot, and then test again if it happens again then move it down one more. This is the most likely cause of a computer freezing. Another idea is to update your Video adapter drivers.

any questions email me.

The most effective (and inconvenient at that) is to save your own files on discs, clear your hard drive and reinstall your OS, software, and backed up files. It'll take a few hours. cringe.

There are a number of things that cause them to freeze: junky hardware/drivers, spyware/malware, and, less commonly, overheated CPUs and chipsets.

It's usually just too much crap running on your machine. Clean 'er out!

it could be many things. It could be an old computer and its just thinking or you may have to reintall windows if you have Win98 or WinME if you have WinXP then you can Restore it back to a time when it did not do that.
