It is a great career, unless you have a family. Then it sucks for them. If you stay the distance, the pay and benefits are great as an officer. Just stay out of trouble and everything will be cool. You don't want to get in trouble in the military (i.e. drugs).

I'm in the AIr National Guard, and I don't regret a thing. Before you enlist, know why you are doing so. If you want a military career, then the best way to do it is to to become an officer. The pay and benefits are better. If you want to use the military to get yourself and education, the national guard is hard to beat. If you don't know what you want to do, but you know you want to do something and get away from your old life for a while, then an active duty tour hits the spot. I also believe of all the branches, the AF is the one with the greatest benefits, not to diminish our other services at all, but that is just my opinion.
Oh, yes, benefits. These are the national guard ones I can speak of, I am not informed as to the ones for ROTC or active duty. If I am deployed for more than 180 days under any anti-terrorism campaign, then I will recieve free education at my state schools, CT, for the rest of my life. While I'm in school, I my tuition is waived, and I get my monthly salary and my G.I. bill on top of that. Lastly there are sign on bonuses, some of which are up to $15k, with additional educational bonuses. Talk to a recruiter first, and before you sign anything, make sure you get everything spelt out in writing.

For Active Duty Benefits, you get free health, eye, and dental insurance, life insurance, you get discounts on car insurance, you get free schooling, housing benefits, etc. There are a ton out there. My dad was in the Air Force for 22 years. We moved a TON, but I LOVED it. I'm 23 now and he's been out for 10 years, but I still move around a lot. In those 10 years I've lived in 5 states. Anyways, your kids will look up to you and practically be born with a sense of pride for you serving your country. I know I'm proud of my dad.

I'm not, nor ever have been in the military, but I can tell you that it's a great route. Just be warned that the Air Force academy (as well as all the others) don't accept asthmatics....don't know if that even applies to you.....but it really screwed up my plans. But best of luck to you.

The USAF, of all the five U.S. branches is the best. College degreed recruits went in and did only the protocol "layout" part of basic training, and--depending on the applicant's "test scores" (politics) and degree earned, they went in direct as Lt.'s. ( a few went in as Captains and one I knew waltzed in as a Major ).
From there, you can opt to go to USAF Academy in Colorado and do two years for another career promotion. From there, it's savvy politics and who you know. Sounds ugly that way I say it, but that's how the world works---especially these days.
