The AK-47 may be the most popular assault rifle ever but you specifically asked for the "best" and that would have to be the current standard issue combat rifle for the US Army.
The M16A2 5.56mm rifle is a lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed, shoulder or hip-fired weapon designed for either automatic fire (3-round bursts) or semiautomatic fire (single shot) through the use of a selector lever. The weapon has a fully adjustable rear sight. The bottom of the trigger guard opens to provide access to the trigger while wearing winter mittens. The upper receiver/barrel assembly has a fully adjustable rear sight and a compensator which helps keep the muzzle down during firing. The steel bolt group and barrel extension are designed with locking lugs which lock the bolt group to the barrel extension allowing the rifle to have a lightweight aluminum receiver.

Primary function: Infantry weapon
Manufacturer: Colt Manufacturing and Fabrique Nationale Manufacturing Inc.
Length: 39.63 inches (100.66 centimeters)
Weight, with 30 round magazine: 8.79 pounds (3.99 kilograms)

Area target: 2,624.8 feet (800 meters)
Point target: 1,804.5 feet (550 meters)
Muzzle velocity: 2,800 feet (853 meters) per second

The AK's have it to me. They're not that accurate (3-4 moa is average for most of them, or about 3-4" groups at 100 yds). But the thing is, in a firefight, you're not shooting at dimes, you're shooting at PEOPLE, and they're shooting back so you're not going to be shooting very straight anyway. Ever see footage from Vietnam? They didn't take time and plink enemies away with single rounds, they hid in ditches and raised their rifles over the ditch and emptied off a clip, never even seeing where they were shooting.

Plus it WON'T jam. I own a Chinese AK (mak-90 sporter), and it has never jammed. Plus most engagements are well within 200 yards, which about as far as you'd trust an AK anyway. Their bigger bullet does more damage than full metal jacketed .223 rounds (as they go straight through the target, so most of their energy is not put into the person, but what it hits AFTER the person). A 7.62x39 round is more likely to release more of its energy in the body it hits, and it has a tendency to knock victims flat on their back.

urbansurvivor the mini14 isn't an assault rifle...it's a rough miniature look alike (in some ways) of an M14 but uses the exact same ammunition as the M16...5.56mm or .223..oops sorry..didn't know they made a mini14 in 7.62mm (.308)...i stand corrected

I don't know what's best...been trying to figure that out myself. I've got plenty of experience with an M16 (before they were limited to 3rd bursts) and while I don't agree with complaints about reliabilitry, I still feel the round was too light. I have no experience with an AK47 but everyone says thats the one to get..personally I don't trust some of the countries of origin. If i could get my ideal it would be a shorter barreled, lighter wt. using an M14 style action, with a 30 rd banana. Still theres the problem of humping the ammo. In nam I carried 30 magazines fully loaded for M16...with 7.62mm ammo that would weigh a ton. technically though an M14 wasnt an assault rifle..it was a battle rifle so that would have to be out as far as answering your question...maybe an HK though I've never used one.

Honestly the Ak-47 is by far the best and possibly the perfect military rifle made to date. For one it has been used by dozens of countries for almost 60 years and WILL be used in combat for many more years to come. The people who say the AK47 has terrible accuracy have probally never even held one. Yeah, you wont get perfect groupings but let's face it the AK is a military rifle designed to kill people. I can easily shoot pie-plate sized targets at 100yards with mine, so hitting a person at 100+ yards would be easy for any soldier. The AK has been proven by the sheer amount of service and people that have used it.

Robins Hoods Pea Shooters at 400 Paces. Backed up by Bow & Arrows at 700 Paces. Not forgetting the Friar Tuck Assualt Rangers at 1500 Paces concurrently armed with the Le Enfield bolt action open sighters. Majority of FT's Rangers knocking down moving targets over open sight at 1200 paces.

Compliments 2nd Battilion The Sherwood Foresters.

Hello,
I prefer the M-16...
However,The AK-47 is much easier to maintain.
You can leave it in a mud puddle,And because of the loose tolerances of the machining involved. It will fire as if just taken out of the shipping crate...
The M-16 in my own opinion is better though. As it is lighter...
You can carry more ammo,As the high velocity rounds are lighter and still pack a punch. And it is far more accurate and easier to carry...
And no,I am not in the military...
