You didn't mention his age.

Perhaps it's the crackling sound of the outer part of the onion he doesn't like?

Maybe he doesn't really like the taste of the onion in certain foods, but he's getting the word "taste" mixed up with the word "sound"? Don't put onion's in foods he doesn't like them in. The worst thing you can do is "force" kids to eat a food they gag on or detest.

Well, my little brother didn't like onions as he was growing up because of how they sounded in his mouth while he was chewing them (if they weren't cooked long enough I guess). He used to always say the crunch of the onions grossed him out. I didn't get it and still don't but he's 25 now and still hates raw onions.

I am sure he means the smell and the taste. He eats the certain food when there is not much onions in it.Try to use a little less for him,see how it goes.

i sometimes hear and odd crunching griding sound when I eat raw onions or onions that aren't cooked enough, this causes me irritation and a sad felling, perhaps your son experiences the same thing

It could be SYNESTHESIA. Doubtful, but you never know. Its a condition where people taste colors, see music, or taste music and hear colors, maybe taste shapes, there is no end to it. He may hear instead of taste the onion. The only way to tell is by asking him about other foods. If that's the only one, then you can rule it out.

I'm sure he's talking about the crunchy texture when he is chewing it. Often kids don't like the contrasting texture of firm onion in things, I know I didn't, and my daughter doesn't although she will eat it with no problems if it is cooked soft.

maybe the crunch or mushiness of it...when he bites down...depending on how you cook it.
or maybe he doesn't like the sound of the word...which wouldn't be weird, my son doesn't like the sound "four" strange I know. He says it hurts his ears.
