there's a cardinal that hangs out outside my window in my apartment complex and it makes the screechiest, highest-pitched noise i've ever heard. the little f*cker wakes me up at 5am everyday and will go until 9am. sometimes he's even there screeching when i get home from work. although the thought of a BB gun is tempting, i don't want to harm or hurt him, i just want him to GO AWAY!!!! i can't sleep!! i'm going to rip my hair out! HELP!!!!

The person right before me answered this question perfectly. I used to work at a wildlife center and we had people ask this question all the time, specifically about cardinals.
Cardinals are very territorial birds, especially around breeding season. They often think their reflection in the glass is another male and will try to scare it off. Sometimes they even try attacking and beating themselves against the window.
The solution is simple and easy.
You need to cover the window. You can use a sheet or even tape some newspaper up. And you have to tape it to the outside. You need to keep it up until he is gone.
This will solve your problem of territorial male cardinals.
Hope this helps!

Big rubber snake from a toy store. I use one in the tree next to my pool and it has worked very well. Just put the snake in the tree about half way up if you can... or have a friend do it for you.

call the pope....he is the cardinal's superior..
lol
seriously... try to get an electronic pest remover that emits a high pitched sound..plug it on the outside if possible where you notice the activity..if that is not possible you may need to set off some loud firecrackers..that scares birds off..it works with pidgeons anyway...

Get one of those plastic owls, we use one to keep blue jays and squirrels away. It works like a charm and doesn't scare the little birds away. I've also heard a picture of one in your window will do the trick too.

I know exactly whats wrong! He sees his reflection and thinks its an opposing male. Curtains will not work because they are on the inside. So you could put some thing on the outside like a sheet but it will get dirty and might look bad but you could try 

call the pope..

haha, really, go to a garden store and get one of those plastic owls. It will scare most songbirds away.

A plastic snake might to it too.
