What ever you want. After housebreaking, most people train: come, sit, lie down, stay, and heel.

Read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin

Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

Generally basic obedience is as much about training the owner as the dog. On one level you are merely training the dog to heel, sit, and stay. On another level the dog is learn that his/her owner is in charge. The owner mean while is learn how to reward and punish the dog. On another level the owner is gaining the confidence they can control their dog.

Sit, stay and lie down, plus, a big plus, the meaning of the word "no" or some other grunt, action that means the same. I do a deep, utt-utt and they stop what they are doing. Keep in mind that dogs are great communicators in body language, both theirs and ours! That makes things a lot easier if you pay attention!

Pretty much the basics...sit, stay, sit/stay, down/stay, come. The sit/stay is your dog is sitting and you move away from him when told to stay. This is a wonderful time to also socialize your dog and to work with you one on one.

So the dog will not compete with people for survival. It is so the dog becomes dependent on the master for food instead of killing the master.

First off you teach them the focus command then you can start with the sit command, and come command. once the dog has learned these commands then you can move on to the down command and the stay command. once you have taught the dog these commands then you can start your off leash trainging, and the long commands ( long sit, long stay, and long down).

They learn to sit, stay, come, wait, down, heel, drop it, depending on how long the class lasts most of those things are taught. Might just be sit, stay, heel. if it is a shorter class

basically what everyone else said..BUT its also to socialize your animal around other people and dogs,,,and it teaches them that you (hopefully) are more exciting than whatever else is going on so they will listen to your commands

good luck ♥

I teach people to teach their dogs how to be welcome family members. This means not to jump on people, to go potty outside, not to bite, to sit, to be friendly.
