To a certain extent they can. For example, they process and recognize movement and motions that they have seen before, and also they most likely see certain things on the screen itself and not what is being transmitted. They some how becom stimulated by the repetitive motion, but it usually depends how the animals brain is wired. So in short, to an extent they are watching the TV.

I don't think they grasp what is going on anymore than they grasp most human things. They do inter react with the TV. My cat stalks and jumps on top hangs over the edge of the front and checks out the back. If a dog barks on the TV while he is perched on top. He jumps down and slaps his dog! Even if he is in the other room. The cat is a little moody about his TV viewing.

I don't think they can get the concept of TV shows. But my Black Lab watches TV with me & my wife...usually animal planet. Then he barks at the other dogs on the show, and jumps up to the screen when he hears sounds and sees the movement of other animals. Like Meerkat Manner.

They don't understand what is going on. The noises and images just catch their attention. My dog likes to watch Animal Planet with me. She doesn't understand what is going on. She just knows that there is a dog, a cat, or a squirrel on tv.

probably not the deeper info - but the basic concept of some animal shows - like that cat ran from there to here...and stuff like that... My dog LOVES to watch dog shows and gets excited at the german shepherds and white poodles - he jumps at the TV - he is a doxie/terrer mix... :)

Probably not the information as far as words go - but they sure love to watch the pictures and sounds. I leave teletoon or the Animal Planet on for ours when we go away.

My dogs sleep on me when we are watching tv. But they do bark if they hear another dog or strange noices. They don't care about the show at all.

sometimes. but indeed they are not watching, they just face the same place you are looking at. because dogs and cats only can see black and white, so i do not think they can really understand what the tv says. however, they can understand u, because u are their best friends.
