I play with him and show him plenty of affection. But, it's annoying when he's scratching up my leg or my arm. So, is he doing this for MORE attention or just trying to dominate me in an affectionate way?

Dominate you in an affectionate way AND get your attention. Correct him with a leash or squeeze his paw a bit when he does it. And teach him to do something different to get your attention. Read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
