can anyone give me ideas for places to voulnteer in? besides the hospital or a public library?

I would work with the elderly. These folks are one of the most neglected special needs populations out there. They could hire you to volunteer as a sitter. In this position, you may talk with a patient, take them for a walk, play board games, and read a book to them, or even assist in reading their mail (many have bad eyesight). Also, you could express an interest to assist with activities as well.

There should be many NGO (non-government organization) and many NPO (Non-profit organization) around. Each group has a different cause. Causes can vary from education to feeding the hungry, caring for the homeless to conveying traditional cultures. Choose a cause and join one of the those group. I think it's wonderful that you care.

Contact the united way. They can put you into contact with nonprofits that may have the type of volunteer work you are interested in and best suits you.

you can try elementary schools. As an elective my little sister volunteered at one of the local elementary schools for 4 hours a week.
