I call my mother-in-law by her name. She asked me to call her mom, but I just wasn't comfortable with it.

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones who has a wonderful relationship with their mother-in-law and i call her MOM...
and i do not feel like it is back stabbing my mom.. and my mom doesn't seem to mind it either as she lives an hour away she's glad that i do have that kind of relationship with mother-in-law.. it gives her peace of mind..

Until you get married you should call her by whatever is most comfortable to both of you. After you are married it is good and proper to can her Mom. There are now two mature women in your life and Mom is the warmest name to call her. If you ask your Mother she probably won't mind as she has been there too.

The main thing is ask her what she wants you to call her,if it is Mom then tell your Mom that's what she wnts you to call her,it's not back stabbing it's getting close and being excepted into the family.I've been married 25 years and my mother-in-law still want me to call her Mrs.-----,go figure but i do.

It wouldn't hurt to ask her what she prefers. Otherwise, she could get cranky, if you're calling her something she doesn't like. If you call her "mom", that's not taking anything away from your mother. Mom is a casual form of mother.
