I think nothing but if you feel you must give something make it a card with a sweet note letting him know that the breakup was a wonderful happening in your life. The money you were going to spend on a gift have some girl friends over, order pizza, videos and celebrate your freedom. Have fun ....Be sure to have this get together on his birthday it makes it that much sweeter.

Nothing. He will think you want to get back together and his new girlfriend or boyfriend will interpret your actions as a come on and a source of interference. Send a card and call him on his birthday. He will know you care. You can always suggest a nice dinner for everyone. Let him know it's up to him and his new companion. If he isn't dating anyone, invite him to a barbeque or a house party instead. Wish him well and don't interfere with his relationships.

Just a simple happy birthday in an e-card (hallmark.com) or a paper card.
No gift because he may look deeper into that.
And if you choose to go with the card, then write 'from' not love or anything that could give him mixed signals!

The best present for an ex-boyfriend.

NOTHING. That's the only way he will know your over him. Guaranteed if you give him something, he will think in the back of his mind you still care for him "More than friends". I guess the question is do you care more than friends about him, in truth.
